PROCEDURES OF TEACHING

            When I was officially turned over to my practicum school which is the MTsN 1 Mataram, I have given one class, a grade nine class in English which starts at 11:20 and ends at 12:40 on Mondays and 1:00 pm up to 2:20 on Tuesdays. My cooperating teacher told me that I need to continue his lesson for chapter three which is Labels, understanding the labels in medicine, food, and beverages.

            The first thing I did is I asked my cooperating teacher about the activities that he actually gives to his students and his way of teaching. After that, I borrowed the book that he is using and look for chapter three. I was actually confused with the content of the book because the only thing that’s in there is basic information about the topic and a lot of activities that I think we're literally the same. So I try to find other information on the internet and provide additional lessons for the topic. And since they are not studying the structure of the language I and my cooperating teacher do communicative language teaching.

            I do a lesson plan for the chapter, six meetings to be exact. I think of the activities and also asked suggestions to my cooperating teacher. I made a powerpoint presentation and video presentation for I believe that it is interesting to the students when they saw something and have an actual scenario.  I introduced to them the Labels, the benefits of understanding and checking the labels of food, medicine, and beverages. I also exposed them to the important indicator that is included in the drug fact label and introduces the over-the-counter medicine and prescription medicine.

            And since their schedule time is a nap time schedule I provided them motivations that can awaken their spirits and willingness to learn. I also provide activities such as us to perform commercial that is related to the topic, do a Venn diagram, create a to-do list, and do a matrix while finding the answers from the other group.

            Since it is a communicative language teaching I always asked them questions and let them answer using the English language. They also used the English language in their activities like with the activity about doing the matrix where they need to find the answers from other groups by asking and doing an English conversation with other groups. And also I always asked them to share their answers on their activities and their insights using the English language.

            And after the entire topic that we discussed, the activities, I always give them the importance of those topics in their everyday life and how they can use it in their daily life.

TIME MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZING ACTIVITIES

            I always go to school early, even though my class starts at 11:20 in the morning. I stay in the hall together with the Indonesian student teachers; I talked to them while I am preparing for my lesson. Sometimes I also asked them of the different words in Bahasa language. I checked my lesson plan again for me to be guided and also my powerpoint presentation.

            Students are already in their room before I go in since my subject is the last period in the morning, so I set up first the projector while students are getting ready for the lesson. If I have activities that will need materials such as cartolina, manila papers, paste and etc. I tell them ahead of time so it will not be hard for them to do the tasks. I also downloaded a timer for the activity for them to be guided with the allotted time.

PROBLEM-SOLVING

            I always do oral questioning to the students about the things they may encounter if they don’t check and understand the labels of food, medicine, and beverage. I also use probing questions in order to seek clarifications and uses questioning techniques for me to get the desired results.

 

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

            The foremost concern of the teachers aside from student learning is managing the classroom effectively. Cleanliness of the classroom is not a problem for me because every day before and after the class the assigned students always clean the room but the problem I encountered when it comes to classroom management is the student’s noise and misbehavior. Since they are very excited to meet me and to have a foreign teacher sometimes I cannot control their excitement but when I start the lesson and tell them that they need to listen well and participate in every activity that I have they settle down. But despite this, my cooperating teacher suggests that I need to improve my classroom management especially when it comes to group activities.
